Casualty of a Domestic War

Slain Chicago Police Officer laid to rest. Honors funeral for Richard Francis.

I like the words of the priest: "It's the only profession in America where being murdered is referred to as the line of duty." Father Tom Nagle, Police Department Chaplain.

I don't know what mistakes were made here. Perhaps a cop in a one person squad. Certainly a system that did not help or take off the streets a seriously mentally ill woman. All I know is that a good man nearing the twilight of his police career was shot and killed.

He served his country in Vietnam, his city as a Chicago cop, his neighborhood as a coach and mentor, and his family as a husband and father. The world is a slightly better place because of him. It would be nice if that could be said for all of us.
